Course Description

As federal tax audits become increasingly rare, state tax departments have been picking up the slack and, in doing so, have brought state tax controversies to the forefront for many tax practitioners and businesses.  While many of these cases are resolved during the audit, a considerable number ends up being protested and appealed. Knowing how to work through these adversarial proceedings, including thorough knowledge of practice and procedure, is a must.

This course will cover different aspects of handling complex state tax cases at different points in the controversy process, with a particular focus on New York State’s administrative protest system for disputed tax cases.

Presenter Ariele R. Doolittle, Esq., brings significant experience in this area and focus her practice on state tax controversies and appeals. She will discuss different considerations and approaches for handling state tax controversies and appeals.

Learning Objectives:

  • The Audit Process

  • Administrative Protests and Appeals

  • Judicial Review

  • Tax Planning to Minimize Audit Exposure
